We are a divided society. We like to categorize ourselves according to political affiliation, race, and religion. We are members of the middle, low-income, or wealthy classes. We choose what seats to sit in during a football game according to the team we are rooting for. It is oddly comforting to know that you belong. All too often, transgender youth are denied that sense of belonging because they defy societies categories of male and female. Society’s collective response of marginalization, shaming, and violence negatively impacts transgender youth and their mental health. Expanding our view beyond the gender binary could increase understanding and tolerance. Understanding and tolerance creates acceptance. Acceptance means everyone would belong. Our society often uses sex and gender interchangeably, but an important distinction needs to be made between these two terms. In biology, organisms are classified as either female or male based on their reproductive organs, chromosome s, and hormones. Differing physical characteristics become apparent with maturity. While sex is anatomically based, gender is more complex. It is a social construct encompassing the attributes and behaviors that society deems appropriate for that gender. Social norms in the Unites States reflect a gender binary, hence there are cultural expectations for women and a different set for men.
